The Expat Eagle’s Verdict

Well that was worth the wait, wasn’t it? We all knew how Huddersfield were going to play, even the manager said so after the match. It was expected that they would play with their ‘high-tempo’ pressure game and we’d struggle because we were playing a new system.

It seemed like we were ill prepared and not quite sure what to do with the ball when we had it with some players seeming to panic when put under pressure in possession.

I can sympathise. Most of our players have played in recent years with one thing in mind, get the ball forward! It must be somewhat of a culture shock for them to play a short, patient, passing game.

We don’t have the players to play the 343 possession game the manager wants us to play and I dread to think what will happen if we get any injuries to the starting 11. As the great Steve Coppell once said, actually he said it many times, you should play a system to suit the players you have.

There were no surprises when the team was announced, except for Ward starting ahead of Townsend. In truth the team picks itself, we have no depth and unless we get in at least 4 players it will be a long season ahead of us.

Huddersfield were a little fortunate with their first goal. A near post corner was flicked on to the far post and was going out of play when it was poked back in to the 6-yard box only for it to hit Joel Ward and go into the net. There was nothing Ward could do to get out of the way.

If their first goal was fortunate their next was a calamity on our part. Huddersfield broke down their left and a cross was whipped in where we had our 3 centre backs. Non of them noticed Mounie running in who jumped in front of Riedewald to head the ball in past Hennessey.

Riedewald didn’t even jump for the ball and it was a complete shambles for our defenders. Riedewald is young and I am not writing him off but at 21 he has a steep learning curve to become a decent Premier League player.

With a little under 15 minutes to go and us chasing the game de Boer took off a centre back and brought on another one! Fosu-Mensah made way for Tomkins who immediately lost Mounie who ran in front of him to smash the ball past Hennessey to put the game beyond any doubt, as if it wasn’t already!

Overall we looked a little uneasy in possession and when we got in the opponents half we looked a little toothless up front. I don’t blame the players, I just think we will take a while to get used to the new system. If we do at all.

I’m dreading the trip to Anfield to face a Liverpool team who play in a similar style to Huddersfield only with top class players.
