Virgil van Dijk – Proof That It Can Be Done!
Clubs can sign players outside of the transfer window
This evening Liverpool announced that they have agreed to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m, four days before the transfer window opens.
Liverpool announced the signing of Virgil van Dijk this evening for a fee reported to be £75m.
The news proves something that I have been saying for a long time, namely that clubs can negotiate, agree and complete transfer deals outside of the transfer window. However, naturally, the player can’t move until the transfer window opens.
Incidentally, the deal brings Liverpool’s spending to £170m for 5 players from Southampton in three-and-a-half years. They could have bought the club for less!
Here is the tweet announcing the deal.
The main reason I am highlighting this deal is that there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why Crystal Palace could not and should not have been negotiating deals over the last few months.
If we have been discussing terms with clubs and players then this would mean that when the transfer window opens we can bring in players directly and not fanny around until the last day.
There is no reason why we should not be on the front foot, after all, we have a ‘Sporting Director’ who is employed for this very reason.
Let’s see if Steve Parish and Dougie Freedman have their finger up their arse or if they actually have their eye on the ball.
I suspect I already know the answer and have done since August 31st.
